Puryear Family in McLean County, KY

My father was William Puryear, born 1913 in Calhoun, KY. His father was William E. Puyear who died between 1926 & 1929. Dad's Mother was Clara Higgs, died 1948 or 1949. Wm. E. was a widower with 2 small children when he married Clara. Have no other dates (births, marriages) at this time. Social Security Admin. added the first 'r' when Dad applied for his SSN. Have heard stories as a child about brothers with different spellings and hints about family splits associated with the spelling differences in the family tree. My sister and I discovered recently that our birth certificates have different spellings Puyear (sis) before the social security act and Puryear (me) after. I know absolutely nothing about my grandfather except that he died while my Dad was in 9th grade. Have been reading posts on this site and am fascinated. Any info anyone has to share with me about my family's origins would be greatly appreciated. Only living member of Dad's generation is Dad's brother-in-law who is senile. No help there.
