My husband's grandfather traced the Puryear name from 2 brothers coming from France to Roanoke, VA in the 17th century. At this time, the spelling was changed from Perrier (like the water) to Puryear. The pronounciation that we use is Purr-Yur.From my husband's family research, every Puryear has descended from these 2 brothers.I have also heard the pronounciation Purr-i-er.My husband and I live in Raleigh, NC, and there is a large community of Puryears in eastern NC.The pronounciation in this area is the same as my husband's family, who is from eastern TN.
