I am the great grandson of Mary Ada Puryear, born 1876 in Scottsboro, Alabama, this according to her daughters birth certificate. Her daughter, Rosa Grace Dugger (maiden name)b.1904, is my grandmother. Mary Ada Puryear was the daughter of Solomon S. Puryear, born in 1847 in Granville Co. N.C.. As were Amy, Minnie, and Carrie. Mary Ada was the eldest. I found Solomon in the 1860 census of Macon, Co. N.C. as being 13 yrs old along with his siblings Porteus, 21 yrs; Mary A., 15 yrs; and James R., 10 yrs. Their father is Alexander S. Puryear, 37 yrs. Their mother is Mary P., (Butler) 46 yrs. Their marriage can be found in the book 'Granville Marriages 1753-1868,' on page 273. They were married 16 Dec. 1835. In Grace H. Puryear's book in section IV, page 126, chapter 4 it states Robert Harmon Puryear, (b.1755) son of William Puryear Sr. (b.1725), married 1nd Mary Ellen Stovall and had issue: Thomas B., William, John, James, Seymour, Harmon & Appling. Robert Harmon Puryear married 2nd Rebecca (Sneed?) and had issue: Henry E., Martha, Mary, Sarah, Alexander S., Nancy, Daniel, Betsy, and Richard. William Puryear Sr. was the son of Samuel Puryear, born between 1705 and 1694, either in Warwick Co. Virginia or France or England. In the 'Warwick Co., Virginia - Colonial Court Records in Transcription' it shows 'Captain William (Puryear??) [issued] unto Robert Puryer or his assigns...[bar]ell of good sound Indian Corne otherwise execu...' this was in the year 1647, on page 17. I believe Robert Puryer to be the father of Samuel Puryear. (Captain) William Parryer is shown as departing form "Buckinghamsher" England "Aprill 1635" for New England on the ship Hopwell with his wife, "Alyce" and daughters Mary, Sarah, and Katheren. William Parryer (also spelled Purryer) may be the brother, or uncle of Robert Puryer. - teltalheart
