Thanks Again Bob.
There are a few things I can comment on for certain regarding your side notes "( )" that may or may not be of some help and/or clarification to you.
The spelling of Sharrard 'should be' Sherrard. That my dad's (the latter on the list buried at Spring Hill Cemetery) and my middle name: Thomas Sherrard Bell Putney. I'm the (II).
(Note: There was obviously a 'typo' in the book I made reference to in my previous message regarding David and David H. Putney.)
In a book titled "Pioneers and Their Homes on Upper Kanawha" by Ruth Woods Dayton has the following to offer (In which the dates you've listed from cemetery records seem to agree but, should clarify some of your notes):
Dr. Richard Ellis Putney was born in Buckingham County VA, born March 13,1794 and came to the Kanawha Valley between 1812 and 1814. He lived and practiced medicine at "The Salines" until his death in 1862.
In 1815 he married Ann Ruffner (1792-1852), daughter of David Ruffner, prominent salt-maker and landowner in Charleston. (Hince, The Salines")
Dr. Richard and Ann Elizabeth Ruffner Putney had seven (7) children. Four (4) sons and three (3) daughters, as follows:
A Son: Dr. James Putney (1816-1876) who married Mary E. Reed. He practiced medicine (physician & surgeon) in Malden, WV. He graduated from the University of Maryland [class of 1889]. They lived in what is now used by the Salina Lodge (the earliest Masonic lodge in the valley, later occupied by my grand-father, Robert Sherrard Bell Putney and Ellen (AKA Helen) Lowe (Willis-previous marriage) Putney.
A second son: Richard Ellis Putney, Jr. (1818-1895) was the local Postmaster during the Taylor-Filmore administration, as well as being an attorney and a selling agent for salt manufacturers.
Richard E. Jr. and his wife Alethia Todd Putney had "one son", Alexander Moseley Putney (Jan, 20 1852 - Jan, 1934).
Alexander married Alberta Rebecca (Birdie) Littlepage (1862-1955). Alexander donated a lot at Reed, WV, a short ditance from Malden upon which was erected the Putney Memorial Church. (And the town of Putney was, of course, named in honor of Mose)
It goes on to say:
Of the other two sons of Dr. Richard E., Jr.,
David H. died at age 21. (Don't think so!)
And Lewis, born 1826, married Julia Bedell of Georgia.
[The cemetery list shows two (2) David's.
David and David H.- David H. is my grand-father's father. It was the other David and not David H. that died at age 21.]
David H. Putney had two children with Irene Bell: my grand-father Robert Sherrard Bell Putney and Gertrude (I can't remember her middle name at the moment.) I used to visit her when she lived on Bream Street in Charleston years ago when I was just a kid. She smoked a pipe and at her age at the time was remarkably intelligent.
Of their (7) children there were three (3) daughters of Dr. Richard E. and Ann Ruffner:
Ann Electra Putney - born 1822 - Married Samual Doyle.
Frances N. (1824-1862) Married Moses Norton.
Susan Eve (1829-1913) Married James Thayer.
The seven (7) children were of Dr. Richard E. Putney and Ann E. Ruffner (Putney) and not Dr. Richard Putney, Jr. and Alethia Todd (Putney). The latter only having one child, Alexander Moseley.
This information appears to answer some of the (???)'s found in your notes after the names and dates.
I really appreciate the list. Thank You.
