I may be able to add a little more information about the wife of LAWRENCE PYE b. 1842 of Over Wyresdale, Lancashire. JANE BEESLEY was the step-sister of my great-grandfather, JAMES SMITH. Born abt. 1844/45 in either White Lund or Heaton, Lancashire [depending on which census record you read], Jane was the daughter of AGNES BEESLEY (1820-1897). I do not have Jane's birth certificate, but the researcher who helped me locate my SMITH ancestor indicated that Jane was probably illegitimate. AGNES BEESLEY, born in Heysham, Lancashire, married my GG grandfather WILLIAM SMITH on 25 Jan 1853--when Jane would have been about 11--in the Parochial Chapelry of Broughton, parish of Preston, Lancaster. On the marriage certificate, Agnes is listed as "Servant " residing in Broughton; her father is JAMES BEESLEY, Farmer. In the 1881 census, Jane, Agnes and William are living at White Lund Hill, Parish of Heaton with Oxcliffe, Village of Oxcliffe. William, age 69, is a retired farmer, born Lancashire, Heysham; Agnes age 60, born Heysham; stepdaughter Jane Beesley, unmarried, age 36, born White Lund.(PRO Ref RG11/4262). James, the child born in 1854 to William and Agnes, is living 3 properties away. William Smith dies in 1891, leaving his property as follows: " to permit my said wife to have the use and enjoyment thereof during the term of her natural life and from and after her decease I devise my real estate to my son James Smith his heirs and assigns abolutely and bequeath the residue of my personal estate unto my stepdaughter JANE PYE wife of LAWRENCE PYE her heirs and assigns absolutely." I do not have the marriage record of LAWRENCE PYE and JANE BEESLEY, but the Civil Registration Index has the following reference for both a Lawrence Pye and a "Jane Smith," which leaves me to suspect Jane was using the surname of her step-father. Year: 1883 Quarter: June Ê Record Type: Marriages Volume: 8e Ê District: Lancaster Page: 990 Should you not yet have it, I also have the 1901 census showing Jane, Lawrence, and their 3 daughters ALICE, AGNES, and JANET living at Tarnbrook Farm, Over Wyresdale. (This is the same farm where Lawrence is recorded living with his father JOSEPH and other family members in the 1881 census.) I benefitted greatly from your post and the other replies; perhaps together we can find out more about the Beesley side of the family.
