A biography of William B. Pyper, Havre, MT, is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 695 & 696.

William B. Pyper was born, 6 Aug 1867, second of three children of George A. and Edith C. (Ball) Pyper. George was born in Scotland in 1820, came to Canada at age 13 on a sailing ship, and set to work as a clerk in a store. He became a successful merchant in Toronto, where for many years he was in the wholesale and retail hardware business. He retired from the business and died 14 Aug 1894. Edith was born at Niagra, Canada, 7 Nov 1833. Her ancestry was traced back to Holland and some of the earliest communities in the American colony.

William B. Pyper was educated in the schools of Woodstock, Ontario, until age 14. For four years he served an apprenticeship in the drug business in Woodstock. In 1889, he left Canada for Chicago and went on to St. Paul, MN, where he was employed in a drug store about five months. On 26 Sep 1889, he located to Great Falls, MT. The following year he was manager of the drug department of Churchill and Webster of Great Falls, then for two years was a druggist at Missoula, and for four years was in business for himself at Coeur d'Alene, ID. After that, he worked for various periods at Seattle, Winnepeg, Grand Forks, ND, and Butte and on 12 Jan 1899 located to Havre, MT, where he took charge of the drug business of A.J. Broadwater and H.W. Stringfellow. In Jan 1902, he established a business for himself but sold it in 1904 when he was appointed US Commissioner, in which he served for ten years. In April 1904, he was elected city magistrate of Havre, and in Nov 1904 was elected justice of the peace. In 1918, he was made superintendent of the US Employment Service at Havre. In 1902, he was county coroner of Hill County.

On 8 Jul 1908, William married Mary R. Sanderson, born in Canada, daughter of George T. Sanderson of Havre, MT. Pyper children: Edith, Georgiana, Margaret, William B., Jr., Virginia.
