My great great grandfather -John Pyper, born c.1820-1830? - and his brother(name not known) came from Peterhead,nr Aberdeen. They were whalers and moved to Dundee. John Pyper did the books while his brother did the whaling.
John P joined the North British Railway Co. as a contractor and moved to Edinburgh. He married Anne Davidson from Newcastle and had 2 sons and a daughter. His brother lived in the Newport area of Fife. There are still Pypers in that area today. My gr.grandfather - Gordon Pyper - was born in 1850. He married Eliza Low Blackie and went out to Ceylon ,in 1875,to be a coffee planter. His brother and sister followed later. Gordon and Eliza had 5 children in Ceylon.
Eliza died @30yrs of age and is buried in the Old Scottish Cemetery, Kandy.
Of the 5 children 4 were daughters , Anne married Duke Athorpe,Bee married Ice Lyon, Poppy m. Bob Harvey and Peggy m. Rollo Barlow, all the husbands were Ceylon planters and returned to England. The son - Gordon (my grandfather)- was born 1880 on the day the Banks foreclosed because of the Coffee Crash caused by a fungal blight. Gordon snr. then planted Tea and was the pioneer in this industry, he employed his younger brother who finally left Ceylon to breed hogs in Iowa. If tea did not prove successfull Gordon snr. was to join his brother in America. That family of Pypers are now in the Boston area of America. Gordon snr. re married but nothing is known about the step-family.
Gordon jnr.(my grandfather) married Ruth Campbell of Glasgow in 1914. He went back to Ceylon in 1901 with 30 in his pocket when he was 20yrs old, and was put in charge of a tea estate and told to get on with it. Ruth died in 1926
and is buried beside Eliza Low in Kandy. Gordon and Ruth had 3 daughters, Elizabeth,Georgie, Evelyn(Bubbles) and identicle twin sons Peter and James( my father )born 1918 .
This information was given to me by my father, still alive.
I hope it is of some interest to you. Good luck with your enquiries.
