Hi Elizabeth,

I have just found this site - probably by now you have more details about William Pyper/Hastings.

On the 1871 census his birthplace is noted as New Deer, Aberdeenshire with his date of birth around 1794. There is a William Pyper with these details with parents being Alexander Pyper / Elspet Cruickshanks but I have found an Ann Hastings buried in New Deer and her parents are Joseph Hastings and Janet Pyper. She died 26 6 1865 and was born around 1792 and it seems to fit with William being her brother. I don't know how William managed to get from there down to the Stonehaven area.

I would be delighted to hear from you if this makes sense or if you have further details.

Regards, Heather
