Wed. Feb. 10, 1892--Nathaniel Quakenbush an old resident of Jefferson Co. died at the home of his son John Quakenbush in Black Hawk Township Thursday. He was about 88 years of age and his residence in this county dated back...to the 40's (1845). Born in Chatham Co., North Carolina, Dec. 15, 1803 he married Rebecca Gilham in 1823; she died in 1864. Eight children, only two now living--John in this county and Mrs. Nancy Bristow in Taylor Co. Mr. Q. married Fannie Fitch in 1888 and she died a year later. Methodist Church. First class meetings were held in his home, a log house with F.F. Lyon as leader...Interred at Richland. He died Feb. 4, 1892: (in summary) leaves his estate to his son John Quakenbush and daughter, Nancy Ann (Quakenbush) Bristow. He also leaves one dollar each to his grandchildren Charles May, and the only children of his son, Ira Quakenbush " (whose)names are unknown to me." (Albert Austin Quakenbush b. 1866 and Sarah Quakenbush Ecarett b.1861 Glenwood, IA) Misc. Facts: *John Quakenbush and Jemima Free had 4 children; William survived him & 5 grandchildren. Lived in Fairfield, IA. *Jenie Quakenbush m. Sarah E. b.1838 IN and had a son, Thomas H., b. 1858 IA. *Erin/Irin Quakenbush (d.1855)filed his will June 4, 1855 and mentions--"My father, Nathaniel Quakenbush as executor; Mother Rebecca Quakenbush, my two sisters, Mary and Rebecca Jane...my brother Thomas." (I have no information on Mary or Rebecca Jane) *Miss Reva Quakenbush, daughter of William Quakenbush m. Mr. Ban Waters on Nov. 4, 1911. Home was a farm east of Brighton, IA. *Miss Nancy Ann Quakenbush m. Samuel F. Bristow on April 17, 1851 Henry Co. IA 1840 Census: *Isaac Quakenbush/1 male b. 1800-10/1 female b. 1810-20/2 females b. 1835-1840 *Enoch Quakenbush b. 1817 N.C. m. to Anna b. 1823 N.C. (5 children, Ruth, James, John, Jacob and Anna) moved to Lyon Co., KS and lived right outside of Emporia, KS. *Ira Quakenbush b. 1834 IN m. Sarah Pringle (I think b. IN)had a son, Albert Austin Quakenbush. A.A. m. Caroline DeHaas b. 10-2-1868 IA.
