William Quail

My wife, the former Sue Quail of Topeka, and I spent some time in Downpatrick last month in search of traces of William Quail, who immigrated to the USA in 1811.

We took with us a copy of the for-sale poster that her ancestor used to dispose of his land. It was among the papers of Frank A. Quail, Sue's great-uncle, who visited Ireland from Cleveland, Ohio, in 1903. Several small parcels were offered, mostly in the Townland of Tobermoney.

Walking around Tobermoney and asking questions, we were directed to the farm of Robert W. Q. Martin on the Ardglass Road. We met Mr. Martin, and he told us that his middle initials stand for "William Quail." He was able to approximately identify some of the parcels. The Quail name is still used to identify parts of his farm, e.g. the Quail Meadow and the Quail Lane.

After we returned, we took a closer look at the Frank A. Quail papers and found a typed copy of a lease dated 1786 "between Robert Martin of Tobermoney Barony of Lecale Parish & County of Down, of the one part, and William Quaill of the aforesaid, of the other part ..."

As a condition of the lease, William Quail agreed to grind all of his corn at Martin's mill. The mill building still stands as a very attractive ruin.

To help readers of this forum determine if they are descended from this William Quail, he sailed with his family aboard the Africa and settled on a farm between Canonsburg and Washington, Pa. One of his descendants, also named William Quail, relocated to a farm south of Topeka, Kansas, in 1870 after serving in the Union Army.

I'll be happy to share documents or photographs related to our visit with Robert Martin.
