Born 18th March 1815. In 1851John Tucker was living at Brickyard, Rockbeare. He had been living there since his first child was born in 1840 when he was described in the census as a 'Labourer'.
1851 and John was still at Brickyard, Marsh Green. 36 years old and A'Labourer in the Brickyard'. Also in the household were; Jane his wife, Children, Mary Ann aged 9, James aged 5, both scholar's,, Thomas was 2 years old. There were also 2 nieces,daughters of his sister Julia, they were Nancy (age 7) and Harriet (age 5) Quaintance and described as 'Paupers'. A lodger John Hartnole aged 40and born in Broad Clyst was also in the house.
Between the birth of Sarah Ann in 1854 and Henry in 1857 John and his family moved to Wood End, Huntsham, a move of ........ miles.
In 1861 the census recorded Three children living with John and Jane;
Thomas, John and Sarah Ann. John's occupation was given as an 'agricultural labourer'. Living with them as a lodger was John Arnold..unmarried..aged 53 and born at Broad Clyst.
In 1871 John and Jane were still at Wood End with Henry living with them.. aged 19 and a labourer. The same lodger could well have been in the house but this time his name was spelt Hartnell, but the age and place of birth matched the previous entry.
In 1881 67 year old John was still at Huntsham with Jane and son Henry, a 10 year old grandson Thomas also lived with them and was described as a scholar, he was the son of Thomas (b. 1849). John was described as a 'woodsman and labourer'.
By 1891 John and Jane were still at Huntsham but living at Hayes Cottage, Henry had moved on but the grandson Thomas still lived with them. John at 73 was still described as a labourer.
Does any of this ring a bell for you? Iwould like to know what happened to the parents of the Quaintance children and what became of them.
