John,
I have a birth of 1915 for George Quaintance. He lived in Luray VA in 1933 and left about that time for New York City, "to become a dancer". I think he was a commercial artist in NY for a number of years before settling in Arizona, some prints [advertisments] of that period come up on e-bay fairly frequently. His mother's maiden name was probably Holtzman. This from two drawings [in my possession] he made in 1933 of his Aunt Ruth [Ruth Holtzman Vertner Deford] and Aunt Lolly [Lelia Holtzman Holloway], his age at the time of the drawings was supposedly 18 which agrees with Volker Janssen's book.
Regards, Scott Biggs
