This is interesting material. I'm descended from the Virgina-Kentucky branch of the family and know of several Quaintances who fought on "the other side" in the same war. One of them, mortally wounded at Gettysburg, is buried in Mercersburg, PA. It's a typical American story that two branches of this family, separated by only a couple of generations, ended up on opposite sides of the conflict.
