I have a letter from Ralph M. Buffington to me dated January 17, 1990 in which he states that Thomas Buffington, Jr. maried a woman of German extraction whose name is unknown and had several children including my ancestor, Benjamin Buffington (1730-1814), who married Mercy Frisdell and Thomasina who married a Quaintance. He said he was writing from memory. Ralph was born in 1907 and is now in a nursing home in Georgia. He was working on a book with 25,000 pages of material but this has not been published and I don't know when or if it ever will be. He is considered the big expert on Buffington genealogy.
This Thomas Buffington, Jr. died on Turkey Creek in Edgefield District, South Carolina April, 1768. His second wife was Mary Harlan who he married January 12, 1753 at Old Swede's Church in Wilmington, Delaware in an Episcopal ceremony. One source on the Internet says he was born January 3, 1710 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. His parents were Thomas Buffington and Ruth Cope.
You will not find this material in any published genealogies. Most genealogies have the parents of Benjamin Buffington listed as William Buffington and Alice Rupp based on a book published by J. M. Yeager in 1912. Apparently, Yeager made a mistake. I know very little more about Thomasina Buffington than what is in this e-mail. Apparently, Tamson is some sort of diminutive of Thomasina. Maybe this will help some researchers out.
South Carolina seemed to be a hotbed of interracial coupling. Probably some of the children or relatives of Thomas Buffington, Jr. married or intermixed with Cherokee Indians. Bill LaBach in Lexington, KY. P.S. I have no Quaintance ancestors to my knowledge.
