Steve, I have found some info for you, but I don't know you may already have it. I checked with the county clerk's office (since thats the law area) on your gg-grandpa being the Justice of the Peace. They have no listing of them. The only way you could find out when he served for sure would be to go through their files and look at each document to see who the Justice of the Peace was. So if you have hours of time it could be done. Since the postion is an elected one I am going to check with the county auditor's office and see if they would have any election records on it. If I find something I will let you know. On Amanda "Jennie" Quaintance Darnall's info. Date of Death: 9 Dec. 1927 Place of death: Winterset Cause of death: Cerebral Hemorrhage Physcan: C.B. Hickenlooper Undertaker: H.G. Tidrick Age: 78 1/1 Locate: Page 21 book 3 ( this book is in very bad condition pages falling apart. The county recorder has sent it off to be redone. when it comes back I will check and see if it shows any other info.) I did find Madison County had a lot of Darnall's listed. I looked for Amanda's marriage certifcate, but didn't find it. Madison County has records starting in 1880. In 1846, the first white settler came to Crawford Twp in Madison County. Before it was inhabited by the Fox, Sac and Winnebago Indians. 1846 Madison County was laid out. and 1849 formally organized. 1849 Winterset was located. Court house buildt in 1868 then burned in 1875 and rebuildt in 1876. So you can see why no records for the early years. Probably boring info, but thought I would pass it on. If there are other Darnall's you would like searched I will try to do so. I haven't been to the library to see if they have any old newspapers to search. Today I had a half hour to kill so I went to my public library. I was looking at a book on the history of Madison County, Ia and I found this information. James A Darnall, harness-maker, of the firm of Darnall & Mulliken; born in Hendrichs county, Ind. in 1843, and came to this state (Iowa) in 1858, and to this county (Madison) in 1872;he enlisted in the 28th Iowa Inf., Co.C., in the late war, and served three years; he married Miss Jennie Quanintance, in 1871; she was born in Ohio; has two children: Orion P; and Pearl. Darnall & Mullikin harness-makers. Town of Winterset. I copied this word for word. Hope this gives you some new info. From the birthplace of John Wayne and home to the movie "Bridges of Madison County" and also home of 6 covered bridges. Happy hunting. Ida
