Recent information provided to me by my cousin, Betty Qualls-Vandergriff, by family genealogy book and monument from the Quarles family cemetary in White Plains, TN, traces the family back to England. The following traces my family tree back through the male members of the family. I'll include year of birth and the wives' names if I have them as well as the state or country they were born in (GA, TN, VA, England). I'll start out with me. R. Christopher Qualls, born 1960 (GA), son of Raymond Cecil and Martha Christine Cooper-Qualls. Raymond Cecil Qualls, born 1917 (TN), son of Walter Cecil and Jennie Brannon-Qualls (of Cherokee decent, according to family). Walter Cecil Qualls, born 1893 (TN), son of Christopher Columbus "Lummie" Qualls and Alice Dotson-Qualls. (CC Qualls changed the name to Qualls from Quarles due to a disagreement with his family over marrying an Indian woman.) C.C. Qualls (Quarles by birth), born 1866 (TN), son of William Braxton and Selina Ann White-Quarles. William Braxton Quarles, born 1842 (TN), son of John A. and Mary Polly Hunter-Quarles. John A. Quarles, born 1824 (TN), son of William Hawes and Ruth Hyder-Quarles. William Hawes Quarles, born 1792 (VA), son of William P. Quarles (W. P.'s wife's name was not in the information provided from the monument in the Quarles cemetary in White Plains, TN, though his 10 children's names were that they had in VA before they moved to White Plains, TN, in 1805 are on it.) William P. Quarles, born 1752 (VA), son of Roger Quarles II. Roger Quarles II, born 1720 (VA), son of Roger Quarles. Roger Quarles, born 1695 (VA), son of John Quarles. John Quarles, born 1670 (VA), son of Richard Quarles. Richard Quarles, born 1640 (VA), son of John Quarles. John Quarles, born 1577 (England), son of George Quarles. (The monument has concerning John: "Came to America in 1609. He was here 11 years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock.") George Quarles, born about 1550 (England), son of George Quarles. George Quarles, born 1529 (England). His is the top name on the monument under "Quarles Family." The monument I reference is located in White Plains, TN, near Algood, TN in Putnam County (Cookville is the county seat). From other sources I've traced the Quarles name to Norfolk, England. Though I have no evidence of relationship to my family tree, there is a historical reference of a Francis Quarles being born in Romford, Essex, to a James and Joan Quarles in 1592 (see my posting down the main list under Francis Quarles). The Quarles name goes back through to early American history and to England. I have some information on the siblings of the Quarles in my family tree back to the children of William P. Quarles from Virginia (see above genealogy). I hope the information I have will help others in tracing their family trees, and will hopefully help others provide information on those I mentioned in mine. R. Christopher Qualls Bonaire, GA.
