Phil,
I am aware of James QUANCE who m in Utica in 1849. I've followed him through census after 1850. I wonder if he is the son of Joshua QUANCE Jr, who received a land grant for service in the War of 1812 (in IL) or possibly one of Joshua's brothers. Joshua is the only brother that we know was actually in Utica( in 1818 ). Joshua is listed in Trenton NY 1830 census with his name spelled QUANER. I have no dod for Joshua Jr, nor any for most of his sibs. If you have access to the 1830 census you might want to check to see if Joshua had family and if he did, if there was a male of the right age to be James.
The name James QUANCE is found in Somerset England fairly often and if my quess (just that so far) is correct, James was the name of Joshua Quance Sr's father. Joshua Sr had a s named James and it is in my branch of the family too, through the daughters. I'm fairly sure Joseph is a grso of Joshua Sr.
I'd be pleased to hear from you, Betsey
