Dear Ian,
I have been conducting a similar study of SQUANCEs, and of course, I have been led back to QUANCE as the origin. My earliest confirmed SQUANCE is John (S)Quance of ca 1600, married to Judith (?), living in Roborough by Torrington, and having 5 children baptised between 1624 and 1637.I have traced descendants down from this to the present day, and have a considerable database of several thousand. (including spouses, and afiliated families of course.)
I have a suspicion of the origins of John Squance, but no confirmation as yet. Perhaps we should compare notes?
