I also have a family story about Quantrill and Cantrell. my dad said that the family name was Quantrill. or Quantrell. and an uncle of William Clark's changed it to Cantrell. because of the bad association with the outlaw name. but I always figured if the South had won the war, William Clark would have been a hero??
I know about how family stories go, but does seem like an interesting story to be made up out of nothing at all?? Emma J. (or Emily Jane) Cantrell married John Dennis, 2 Jan 1872, in Dade county Missouri. have attempted to research from the Quantrill side. William Clark did have one uncle, Archibald, who had sons. some of them are in Washington DC on the 1880 census index. that is as far as I have gotten in my research. but if they were still Quantrills in 1880, how could Emily Jane be from a name change in 1872??? interesting puzzle.
