I have an undocumented file in my possession that traces the name back to a "Querueles" in 1085 in England. His descendants lived for about 300 years near a village in England named Quarles. My 3x-gr.grandfather was born Samuel Quarles in Virginia in 1775. He moved to Orange Co., NC where my 2x-gr. grandfather Brice C. was born, then to Shelby Co. KY where War of 1812 pension records show Samuel as Samuel Quarls. Brice then settled in Southern Illinois in about 1830, where he and his descendants were known as Qualls, spelling the name I believe as it was pronounced in the south.
