Hi,
I have been searching the early records of Rhea County TN and have found that Gatewood (who is sometimes referred to as Gator or Gait)was in Rhea in the 1830's and put a tract of land up for sale in 1837. His agent to sell the land was from Bledsoe County ...this Rhea tract of land bordered a Robert Qualls who also put his land up for sale while living in Bledsoe, one year after Gatewood. I have copies of the documents in anyone needs them, I can scan. Gatewood and Robert also appear on the inventory lists of estates of several area residents...sometimes as doublful claims. I understand that many "doubtful claim" lists were inflated with names of relatives so that the taxes on the estate would be diminished. One of these inventory lists was for a deceased resident named Charles Smith. A Charles Smith did marry a Quarles....this may be the same or the son. (This last part is done from memory so I would have to check the dates to know which one.) Hope this helps, Myra Quarles Brown
