The following are writings from Ora Faye Howell Baldwin in 1974.
My notes are in italics. Spelling is what she wrote, some words have evolved over time.

QUARLES

David Quarles had two brothers Ben and John
One sister Elizabeth Lizzie, married a man named Huggins
One son Abner, daughters Salley married a Demming
David buried at Lebnon Church in Dawson County
Weather conditions did not permit burying wife in Dawson County
Wife buried at the Spern Cemetery, northeast of Howell Farm. Lizzie buried there at her side.
I remember going to Lizzie’s funeral, we had moved to Georgia from Texas at the time Lizzie Huggins brother, John Quarles
is buried beside his sister in the Spern Cemetery. There is no monument in the Shern Cemetery only rocks that mark the graves.

All we know bout grandfather John Howell’s family is he had one sister Elizabeth that came to Georgia. She married John
Covington. They lived in Dawson County GA and one daughter named Mahaley and one son Joshia (Josh).

David Quarles and Hilda/Mohan/Bohan Quarles were the parents of
Belinda Quarles b. March 25. 1820. d Sept. 3, 1903.
Married John Howell, b Nov. 8. 1812 d. Jan. 2. 1876

It is not known where David Quarles was born in Georgia or came from some other place into Georgia.
It is known he married an Indian, They lived on land located Northeast of Comm Creek’s Church in Comm
Creek 4 District about seven miles from Ballground, Georgia.

John Howell born 1812 came to South Carolina as a young man from England (may have been born in the US
by other notes) and was a school teacher at that time. Later he came to Georgia lived with at that time among the
Indians. After his marriage to David Quarles daughter Belinda, John Howell born 1812 bought 222 of land from
his Father-in-law David Quarles. He wrote the deeds to the land he purchased from David Quarles as He at that
time was the only man that could write.

I have seen the deeds that he wrote as my father Jesse Howell bought the farm after the death of his mother Belinda
Quarles Howell. My father Jesse Howell died eleven years before my mother and after her death, J.J. Howell, my
father's grandson bought the farm and he owns the farm at this time.

The farm has been owned by the Howells for over one hundred years

The owner of the farm at this time (1974)

Three fourths of an acre is reserved where graves are now situated for grave yard purposes. The sight is located on a Hill
on the Northwest of same farm.

They are the graves of John Howell born Nov. 8, 1812, death Jan. 2, 1876
and his wife, Belinda Quarles Howell Born March 25, 1820, death Sept. 6, 1903
one son David Howell, one son of Thomas Howell, only four graves and there are monuments to the Graves.

Joshuah, Thomas (1842), John Jr., David, Larkin, Jesse (1856), Moses, Alfred.

Daughters:
Martha, Mary, Sarah, Malinda

John and Belinda Howell was my Grandparents (Ora Howell Baldwin).
Jesse and Sarah Howell was my Father and Mother.

John and Belinda Howell had 12 children.
Joshuah Howell married Jane Swinford, after the death of his first wife,
He married Catherine Cox, she survived him..

Thomas Howell was born in Cherokee Co. 1842, married Catharine Pasca (1849) who came from England as a child with her mother.

Son John Howell Jr. while in Civil War military service died of measles.
David Howell died about 4 years old.
Larkin Howell married Sara (Sis) Darby.
Jesse Howell married Sarah Elizabeth Richards
Moses Howell married Addie Terrell
Alfred Howell married _____ Strapp
Martha Howell married J.A. Jackson
Mary Howell married Lee Smith
Sarah Howell married Jonson A. Moody
Malinda Howell married Lynn Gaddis

Joshua and Jane Howell had one son Johnnie Howell.
He was a Doctor made his home in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Shortly before his father's death he came to Georgia and carried his
father to his home in Jonesboro, Ark. Uncle Joshua is buried in Keller Cemetery at Jonesboro, Ark. I knew Uncle Joshua
better than any of my father's brothers. He was an uncle I loved very much. He lived about 2 ½ miles of my Father's home.
He visited with us often. Dr. Johnnie Howell and wife Octavie are buried in Keller cemetery Jonesboro, Ark.

Thomas lived about 3 miles north west of the Howell Farm.

Sons 2: Samuel and Lanie.
Daughters: Mary Jane, Emma, Etta, Minntie, May (all deceased)

John Howell Jr. No children. Deceased of measles in Civil War.

David Howell. Died about 4 year old. Buried on the hill with his father and mother on the Howell farm.

Larkin Howell lived in the Avery Community near Canton 18 or 20 miles from the Howell Farm. Larkin Howell and
wife Sara had 3 sons Barney (California) Moses (New Mexico), James R.

Daughters buried at Masidona cemetery.
Prudy, Ina, Lura (all diseased) Canton, Ga., only Dr. James R. Howell, Akin, SC. He is retired and age 80 years old.

Sons: Carol, Harold, Jesse, Hurbert
Daughters: Dorthy, Edith, Annie

John Q. Howell married Edith Brobest in Pennsylvania
Sons: John, Jr. and Jesse
Daughters: Eula, Mae, Bettie Edith, Clory

Mary Howell married Robert Fincher
Son Jessie
Daughters: Bessie, Clory, Charlcy

Clory Howell died at age 4 years 6 mo.

Eula Howell married J.T. Echols
no children

Ora Fay Howell married Marion S. Baldwin
Son: Roy M.
Daughters: Dessie M., Hazel I.


Jesse Howell and Sarah E. Richards was married at her home 1878 April 25, by pastor E. W. Allred.
My Father and Mother were married 65 years. My father died 1944 at 87 yr. old. My Mother was 92 yr. old in 1955 when she died.

Moses S. Howell was a Doctor. He made his home in Greenville Tex.

Alfred Howell and wife
Sons: Caldwell, John Wayne
D: Annie, and Lelia. Caldwell, John, Annie (diseased)
Alfred W. Howell was a Doctor. He made his home in Cherryville

Daughters:
Martha Howell was a school teacher. She married J. A. Jackson.
She had 3 sons: Joshua, Will, Frank, and a daughter, Syllah.
After Jackson's death she left Cherokee Co and later married Cath Farthan at her death they lived I New Mexico. She was 80
years old and had been blind since the age of 50 years. My mother said she was a good cook and good hearted and nice to
everyone. When it was thought she was dieing, her husband Cath Farthan said when Martha was gone he had nothing to live
for and left the house and committed suicide by shooting himself.

Mary and Lee Smith had 8 children. Their names I do not know. But (all are deceased), Lottie, a daughter, the last I knew of the
family. They lived in New Mexico. and are buried in that, state.

Malinda and Lynn Gaddis had several children.
Their names I do not know as they lived in Texas and New Mexico which state they lived in at their death I do not know.

Aunt Sarah Moody was the only sister of my Father, Jesse Howell I have every seen.
Mr. and Mrs. Johnson Moody owned a Farm about 2 miles south west of the Howell
Farm where my Father Jesse Howell lived we visited often.
They reared their children on this Farm. After the death of her husband she continued to live on this Farm.
Later she Was left with only her daughter Jesse and in her last year
Jesse and her mother moved to Canton, Ga. where Jesse worked and others of Aunt Sarah's children lived. At her death she
was brought back to Comm Creek Church for funeral and buried in the cemetery by her Husband Johnson Moody.
