Hello! My name is Gene Norris. I am researching the family of William Oakley/Hammock/Hammoc and Millie/Milly Quarles/Qualls of Virginia and Overton Co., TN. There is some confusion on this family! I descend from Gilbert Norris, of Oak Hill, Overton Co., TN. His second wife was Emmaline/Emaline Hammoc, born about 1817 in VA. In a deed, their children, Martha Delana and Gilbert William Norris, were named as heirs to William Oakley of Overton Co., TN. Searching the 1850 US Census and 1860 US Census for Overton Co., TN, turned up something interesting: The 1850 US Census for Fifth District, Overton Co., TN, page 45B, 27 Sep 1850, lists: 616 HAMMOCK, William, age 70, born VA Millie, age 50, born VA Thomas, age 26, born TN Mary, age 22, born TN Susan, age 20, born TN QUARLES, Jenicia/Jericia, age 76, born VA In 1860, I could not find this family under the name Hammock but I did find this family which may be the same family? in the 5th District, Overton Co., TN, Oak Hill P.O., page 197B, 16 July 1860: 1781 OAKLEY, William, age 79, born Virginia Mary (Millie?), age 60, born Virginia Thomas, age 38, born Tennessee Susan, age 30, born Tennessee Now, everywhere else I look, I find that Millie Quarles, a daughter of John and Jersuha Quarles, married William OAKLEY in 1811 in Henry Co., VA. Is this the same family? Did they change their name back and forth from Hammock to Oakley? Gilbert Norris is always a few households away from them. I am so confused. I am believing that this is the same family but under two different last names? HELP! email me at christieleague@alltel.net. Thank you. Notify Administrator about this message?
