My maternal grandfather was Joseph Robinson Quarmby, b.1873 in Dewsbury. His father was John Quarmby, born about 1852. John Quarmby married Ellen Haigh in 1873 in Dewsbury (I have a copy of the marriage cert.) so the family seems to have been based in West Yorkshire. However, in census records, John Quarmby is stated to have been born in Stalybridge (and there is certainly a Stalybridge connection as John's son,Joseph, went to live in Stalybridge at one time and my mother, Azubah Quarmby, was born there). But I then have drawn a blank as birth records from Staybridge/Dukinfield/Ashton-under-Lyne do not have a record of John Quarmby being born there at around 1852/3 so I have no indication of his parentage. The space on his marriage certificate for father's name and profession is blank so it is possible that he was illegitimate and took his mother's surname but that is just speculation.
Can anyone help me find further details of this John Quarmby?
