Looking for any information about Margaret Sloan Quay Donvonat slaves. My search is for my gggrandparents (Lloyd and Phoebe Blake). I think they were property of Margaret or Alexander Quay.

This information was found in a book called, " A Place At The Table", by Dr.Alan Stoudemire. The story is about Alan, (white) and Boyce (black) friendship while living in Lincolnton, NC.

This information is an excerpt from the above named book.

Charles Blake Obituary

"Mr. Charles Blake died March 1921, in Chester, SC. His funeral was preached by Rev. R.A __________D.D., of Chester, SC. His body to rest in Gold Mine cemetery and his first wife, Mrs. Hannah Blake died 28 years ago. Mr. Blake was the son of Lloyd and Phoebe Blake was born between the State of Maryland and Wilmington, NC.

His land at Wilmington, NC sold to Quay Donovant. After the death of Mr. Donovant, it was sold to Joshua Blake, near Bascomville, spent the greater part of his life within twenty miles of the above name. He was coverted at Mt. Zion Church in 1990. Lived a Christian life for nine years. Died in his 77 year. He had four sons and two daughters to him namely: Hillard Blake of Chester, SC; William. M. Blake , of Lincolnton, NC; Rev. Samuel Blake, of Richburg, SC; Johnson Blake of Great Falls, S; Miss Hattie Blake of Rock Hill, SC; Mrs. Eunice Blake Lowry of Chester, SC"
Rest in peace. We will see you.

Note: Charles Blake was a slave bought in 1844 by Quay Donovant and was later purchased by Joshua Blake, whose last name he took when he was freed at the end of the Civil War, in 1865.
