One of the reasons for the different spellings is that back in 'olden days' many people were illiterate and so it was up to whoever was making a written recording of a birth/marriage or death etc how they spelt it. It is more noticable when a branch of the family has moved to another district or from Ireland to Scotland and been registered by someone totally new to them. Hence Qua, Quay, Quaye.
