Greetings,
Ellsworth Robideau was born on 30 Jun 1873 in Brasher Iron Works. This is already verified in vital records and in our family Bible.

In the Hogansburg, Registres de la paroisse and missions and forts, I find the following:

"...baptized (unreadable) natum 30 Jun 1873. Parents: patre ignoto et (unreadable) Robidou. Sponsors - C'esaire Deschamps et Adelina Robidou"

NOTE: PATRE IGNOTO "father unknown. When a baby was born out of wedlock and its mother did not give it up for adoption, then the mother's name was recorded in the birth record and the father was recorded as being unknown."

This confirms what my grandmother and relatives had told me about grandfather Ellsworth Robideau(above). Ellsworth was not the son of Francis Robideau and Susan Sawyer (spelled Susan Lager in the Hoganburg registre), he was actually the GRANDSON of Susan Sawyer and Andrew Warner. Andrew Warner was Susan Sawyer's husband prior to her marriage to Francis Robideau. Andrew and Susan had two children, a son and a daughter. The daughter's name was Mary. Mary Warner is referred to as Mary Warner Robideau in some documents. She is the mother of Ellsworth Robideau. My mother remembers her mother telling her that Ellsworth's father was named Barlow (or a variation of that name) and that Mary and Barlow could not get married - no explanation there, at all. Frank and Susan Robideau raised Ellsworth as their son. Ellsworth was baptized on 21 Mar 1874 per registre above. Incidentially, Deschamps has also been written in places as Dishaw. Mary later married a Dishaw. My mother recalls the family having a hardtime in the 1950s trying to write Ellsworth's obituary because they were not sure whether to list Frank and Susan as his parents-which they eventually did. Back then, this was a big family secret but who knows what the circumstances were for Mary. Ellsworth was a wonderful man and he was raised very lovingly. At the time of his birth, I'm sure the situation was difficult for all concerned.

This is the first time that I have found documentation which confirms what the family has said all along - that Ellsworth was raised by his grandparents. I will probably never find a document that clearly shows Mary Warner as the mother but the knowledge that Mary was Ellsworth's mother has been passed on in our family.
