I have been doing some research on the Cordelia Race-Clements line. Cordelia and her husband, Benjamin Clements, are my ggg grandparents through their son, Jonathan Jackson Clements. It has been reported that Cordelia and Benjamin had 6 children. I can only verify four of the children, but will list all reported:
William b. 1828 KY
Benjamin b. 1832 IN or KY
Cynthiana Ann b. 1834 Schuyler Co.,IL
Jonathan Jackson b. 17 Sep 1835 Schuyler Co.,IL
d. 15 Sep 1912 Grant's Lick, Campbell,KY
burial: Oakland Cemetery, Grant's Lick,Campbell, KY
Ebenezer M. b. 1838 Pendleton Co.,KY
d. 20 Jun 1862 Pittsburgh Landing,Hardin,TN of disease while serving in Civil War 21st MO Infantry CO. B He was never married and left no children behind.
Cordelia Race-Clements was living in Camden,Schuyler,IL when she made a sworn statement for Military Pension dated 31 Oct 1864. It states that son Ebenezer was her sole support for two years prior to his entrance into the Union Army on 1 Jun 1862 in Canton, Lewis, MO.. They were residing in Washington, Clark, MO. at the time he joined the Union Army. They are listed in the 1860 Census Clark, MO. along with his sister Elizabeth. Cordelia was sixty years old at the time she made the statement. There is a declaration in the CMSR dated 11 Mar 1865 that puts Benjamin Clements death as "about sixteen years ago in Pendleton County in the State of Kentucky" where he is also buried. My research uncovered that Cordelia Clemens and children, Cynthiana, Jonathan, Ebenezer, and Elizabeth M. were residing in Grant Co.,KY on 16 Sep 1850 Census. After checking the 1850 Mortality Schedule for Kentucky, which covers 1 Jun 1849-31 May 1850, not finding Benjamin Clements listed and taking into consideration the statement made on 11 Mar 1865, I have concluded that Benjamin probably died between 1 Jan 1849-31 May 1849. The statement said he died 'about' sixteen years ago. If he had died between January and March 11, 1849 the statement probably would have said that he died 'over' sixteen years ago. By saying 'about' sixteen years ago, I would think that his date of death would more likely be after March 11 and before June 1, 1849. So, we know that Cordelia Race-Clements was living in Camden,Schuyler,IL by 31 Oct 1864. Other papers in the CMSR reveal that Cordelia was still alive 2 Apr 1866. There is one notation that confuses me, it looks like this: "unreadable to her executor unreadable to 19" it is dated 5 Jul 1866. The file does not give a date for the last payment ending the pension. We can at least assume that Cordelia was still alive in April 1866. I have not been able to locate any death or burial information for Cordelia.
