Most "Name" reference books say RAFFAN is derived from Ruthven (or variations). The name appears around 1200. The 3rd Lord Ruthven was implicated in the murder of Rizzio, then there's the Gowrie conspiracy of 1600, following which the name was banned by an act of parliament etc... But enough of that - I believe its origin is Norse/Viking. RAFN or HRAFN appears often in the Norse sagas - eg those relating to the Orkneys. RAVN is raven in Danish. The Raven was one of the main standards (battle flags/symbols).
The Danish historian C. Rafn believed Vikings colonised America. There is a town in Scotland called RATHVEN, which on a map I have, dated 1735 is called RAFFAN! My ancestor George Raffan (1820-1889) married Elizabeth Reid (1819-1910) is buried in Rathven cemetery with other family members marked by a very warn gravestone. So you see there are more questions than answers. Are we named after the town or vice versa. Is the name of Viking origin or from Ruthven. And what of Ravn(black)==Rafn/Hrafn==Raffan.
And also there is a Pakistani called Faruk? Raffan looking to emigrate to "beautiful Australia"! Raffans though not common are to be found in Scotland, Australia and the USA and no doubt Colombia.
