Hi: First my birth name is Peter Paul Rakauskas, Jr. and my Lithuanian grandfather Pranas (Frank) Rakauskas came to the US around 1898 (His brother Myklos (Michael) came in 1888). There are many spellings of Rakauskas due to what the "recorder" heard, if he were not Lithuanian. Some of the spellings are as follows:
1. Rakauskis
2. Rakanskas
3. Ranansky
4. Rakawski
5. Rakouski
6. Rakowski
7. Rakaoskis
8. Rakauskos
8. Rakaskas
9. Rakauski
10. Rakousky
To name a "few", all of which if you use FamilySearch.com or Ancestry.com you will find them.
My "Rakauskas" folks entered the US under the Russian spelling "Rakousky" and "Rakouski" (the name on my birthcertificate)sometimes used the Polish Spelling "Rakowski". However, after all the dust settled they all used the correct spelling "Rakauskas". Two of my aunts are in both AFamily Search and Ancestry, Sister Anna Marie Rakauskas of the Sisters of Saint Casimir in Chicago and Marijona (Mariona) Rakauskaite (single womans spelling) who was a singer with the Lithuanian National Opera in Kaunas where she died in 1975.
Hopes this helps?, maybe just confusing but GOOD LUCK.
Al Tenuta (aka Peter Rakauskas)
