Hi Richard, you certainly are a Ramsbottom-Isherwood judging by your name..They were all a bit eccentric the old boys...putting a Maori name into the Family...There are quite a few R-I's on the genforum pages..We are all related...Only one came to New Zealand...The Captain...my great-Grandfather...My Grandfather was the one that moved to the North Island early last century ,I think there was a falling out with his old man...My Father was born in 1907 ..the middle one in a family of 9...The Captain was quite a lad from what I have learnt.Distinguished himself in the Maori Wars at Taranaki ...Made and lost a fortune gambling. He and his little Irish wife had 13 children...He married his batman's daughter...and apparently was cut off from the family and sent to N.Z in disgrace....the 2 names almagamated in 17 something ..they were Distillers in Southwich London...We were originally Ramsbottoms who married an Isherwood and there was no issue (no kids ) so they wanted the named kept so hyphenated it way back then....The family Pad was Giunes Court and the War hero Giunes was my Fathers 1st cousin..He was decorated in the war(2) Our family grew up not knowing any of the South Island mob..My Grandfather had a brother who use to visit rarely..I remember him as a very young child..I have heard some tales of the early days of Capt. Whether true or hearsay ...Some other members of the family may be able to give you more info Bernard ,foe example ,I grew up always knowing I was an R-I but obviously never used the full name unless I had to.I was terrified the kids at school would somehow find it out...Now I am rather proud of it, I would like to know more too about the family but I have no-one left to ask now..they are all gone just about.. or have forfotten or don't know they are Ramsbottom-Isherwoods.....Both very proud names fron the North of England going back centuries...Keep in touch and say Hello.Best Regards Shirley Raine (nee Ramsbottom-Isherwood)
