although not a common name in Ireland their is a branch of the Ramsbottom family located in Laois (Leix) County Ireland. They have been their since the 13th Century and like most of the Norman Invaders became more Irish than the Irish themselves with the passage of time.

In the historically important Easter 1916 uprising Patrick Ramsbottom was a local IRA leader. Unaware that Eoin Mc Neill has decided to call off the rising Patrick Ramsbottom took his on Easter Sunday men over to the railway tracks at Abbeyleix to complete his assignment of preventing a Military train reaching and reinforcing the Dublin Garrison. This they successfully did with no loss of life and in the process Patrick Ramsbottom fired the first shot of the 1916 Rising. The uprising went ahead in Dublin and other locations the following day.

Patrick continues his military activities throughout the War of Independance spending most of his time on the run from the Black and Tans in the bogs of Leix.
