I am looking for the ancestors / descendants of James Ramsbottom / Charles Melville at the request of the City of Rochester, New Hampshire. He is the only recepient of the Congressional Medal of Honor that the city has. He received it at the Battle of Mobile Bay, August, 1864, during the Civil War. He and his Father and a Brother, William, are said to have come to America around 1840 from England. He was born in England sometime between 1820 and 1835 (we think). We also think that his Mothers name was Anna_________. Except for the fact that he enlisted in the Navy under the name of Charles Melville approximately fifteen (15) years before the war started (his military records are all cross-referenced back to James Ramsbottom - so it is in fact the same person, we basically can find out nothing about him. The last relative that we can find was an elderly lady Louise (??) Ramsbottom, who died around 1923 and is said to be buried in the Ramsbottom Family Cemetery here in Rochester. Is there an heir out there? Does anyone have more information on the man? Are there sources of information out there that I have not found yet? I await a reply.
RICHARD D. LONGO,
Historian
