James,
You wrote: "...do you know if Lake Randell by Sherman-Denison is named for Choice Randell. I have some family up that way and I have been told that the lake was named after a relative. I do not know if this is just a false story because of the name, or if it is true."
It's funny you should ask...just three weeks ago I raised the same question on the Texas State Historical Association's website which includes "an encyclopedia of Texas history, geography, and culture," but unfortunately they did not have any information in their files about the source for the name of Lake Randell, which I think is a large man-made reservoir. The second question I had about local things named Randell was satisfactorily answered: The Randell Masonic Lodge in Denison was named after Andrew Randell, Choice Randell's only surviving son (Choice had another son, Choice Jr., who died in infancy).
I have always suspected that the lake was named after one of the four Randell brother--George G., Artemus Coleman, Choice Boswell, or James Hope--who were all fairly prominent in the area. The Randell boys were born in Georgia. All four were lawyers, all four were committed Freemasons, and all four ended up living within about a 50-mile-radius area straddling the border between Texas (the Denison/Sherman area) and Indian Territory.
Let me know if you are in any way connected with these Randells, or if you turn up anything about who Lake Randell was named after.
Best regards, Bob Cummings
