I have a Rapp family connection in that my ancestor Catharine (Schoch) born Oct. 10, 1863 Buchanan Co., MO, married on Jan. 20, 1884 to Henry E. Rapp son of George and Elizabeth Rapp. Henry E. Rapp, according to a statement in his estate file, was "killed" August 24, 1887, leaving Catharine and one son Leonard Rapp, who we believe was actually Ora L. Rapp. The Rapps and Catharine (Schoch) Thomas are all buried near each other in the Blakely Cemetery.

Blakely Cemetery, Buchanan Co., MO
Catherine Thomas (1865-1901)
Robert E. Thomas, (b. Feb. 6, 1898 d. Feb. 7, 1900)
Henry E. Rapp (d. Aug. 24, 1882) 28 years
George Rapp, (b. April 22, 1813 d. April 3, 1891) age 77-11-11
Elizabeth Rapp w/o George d. Feb. 22, 1897, age 75-9-5
Ora L. Rapp, 1886-1929

By 1900 Catharine was remarried to a Robert Thomas and living in Marion Twp., Buchanan Co., MO with her 14 year old son Leonard Rapp.

1900 Marion Twp., Buchanan Co., Roll 841 p. 94B
Robert Thomas, 39 b. May 1861, m. 11 years b. MO parents b. MO
Catherine Thomas, 36, b. March 1864, m. 11 years b. MO, parents b. MO
Elmer Thomas, 8, b. Aug. 1891, son b. MO
Goldie Thomas, 5, b. June 1894, daughter, b. MO
Leonard Rapp, 14, b. Feb. 1886, step-son, b. MO, parents b. MO

We lose Leonard Rapp at this point, but do pick up Ora "L." Rapp, who we think might be the same as Leonard Rapp. Ora Rapp in the 1920 census, married to an Ethel, who we think is Ethel Williams. The Ora L. Rapp who is buried at the Blakely died in 1929 and in the 1930 census we find Ora and Ethel's son Melvin living with Frank and Minnie Williams, parents of Ethel Williams.

1920 Marion Twp., Buchanan Co., MO, Roll 908, p. 6A ED 37

1910 Marion Twp., Buchanan Co., MO, Roll 772 p. 83

Minnie L. Williams, 37, wife, md. 15 yrs, b. Mo., father b. Vermont, mother b. IN 2 children / 1 living
Ethel Williams, 14, daughter
Charles Williams, 22, cousin

It gets a bit complicated here as Frank Williams, father of Ethel who married Ora Rapp, was probably the son of Eliza J.(Schmidt) Williams and William Henry Williams. Catharine (Schoch) Rapp Thomas was the adopted sister of Eliza J. Williams, and they were both raised in the household of Jacob and Sarah (Schoch) Schmidt Brindley/Brinley in Buchanan County.

These are the pieces of the Rapp puzzle I've put together so far and none of them is written in stone. I need a real Rapp expert to tell me if I am going in the right direction.

It seemed extremely unusual to list Henry Rapp as "killed" rather than died in his estate file. All we have from the estate file is Catharine's statement that Henry was dead and she was left with a son.....no will, no estate valuation, nothing. So the big question is, how did Henry E. Rapp die and was Ora L. Rapp also Leonard Rapp son of Henry E. Rapp and Catharine (Schoch).
