Writing about his father, Robert, Hiram writes "I remember very distantly when my father, Robert Rathbun, and uncle, George Miller, both lived in Mantua, Ohio in the years of 1828, 1829 and 1830.My father has been a minister in the Close Communion Baptist persuasion. But he, with uncle George Miller, had more recently been carried away with the reformation which had swept through the Western Reserve in Ohio.During the year of 1830, one Parley P. Pratt and one Oliver Cowdery, came along.Father opened his doors and received them kindly; and they preached in father's house.Mr. Pratt gave father a Book of Mormon, and requested him to read it."It appears from this Robert was baptized as a Mormon in late 1830 or early 1831 in the Kirtland, Geauga County, Ohio area.He was named the postmaster of Iowaville, Iowa on May 30, 1849.
