The ancient Gaelic word for "Great House" - probably a fort is Rath.It is believed that people who lived near the River Boyne in Ireland would have referred to themselves as from the Rath at Boyne. It is felt this was utilized when some of them settled near Liverpool.Rath of Boyne found itself much later referred to as Rathbone.Rathbuns and Rathburns are derived from Rathbone.
