Hi Tony
I've got RAWLINSON family in Sherburn-in-Elmet which is only a few miles away - perhaps there is a connection. Here are the details I have so far (with a few of my unanswered questions at the end!)
My RAWLINSON Family
Generation 1. Mary (MAWSON?) born circa 1770 at Newthorpe married to Thomas (?) RAWLINSON born Fewston (?)
Generation 2. Thomas, son of above, born 1807 at Sherburn ("Fairburn" on the 1851 census - I wonder if this is a phonetic error where the census taker misheard) married to Hannah (?). Thomas RAWLINSON was a shoemaker. Anyway Thomas had two brothers also born in Sherburn: John (1802) and William (1805). I also have a Martha RAWLINSON (1800)but only the fathers surname is given so can't be positive that's she's a sister.
In 1851 they were living in Sherburn in Elmet and the entry for them is as follows (courtesy of the wonderful staff at Selby Library)
Edward 10 Sch Sherburn 53W(folio number)
Hannah 33 Sherburn 53W
John 14 Sch Sherburn 53W
Mary 81 Fmr Ag Lab Wife Newthorpe 6W
Mary 17 Sch Sherburn 53W
Richard 12 Sch Sherburn 53W
Thos 42 Shoe Maker Fairburn 53W
Generation 3. John RAWLINSON b.1837 married Mary ANSON (eldest daughter of Elizabeth ANSON and Thomas CLARK of Hambleton, Farmer and Butcher).
John became the Schoolmaster for Hambleton and remained so until 1876 at which point he upped-sticks and moved his whole family to Dewsbury in the West Riding taking with them his wifes' younger brother William CLARK. I think the 1876 turning point happened because the school at Hambleton was "adopted" at this point by the Church of England. In the 1881 census the family are found in Woodbine Street, Dewsbury: (from the LDS Census Database Online):
John RAWLINSON Head M Male 44 Sherbourne, York, England Painter
Mary RAWLINSON Wife M Female 45 Ambleton, York, England Dressmaker
Frances Ellen RAWLINSON Daur U Female 21 Ambleton, York, England Assistant To Dyer & Cleaner
Mary RAWLINSON Daur U Female 20 Ambleton, York, England Dressmaker
Elizabeth Katherine RAWLINSON Daur U Female 18 Ambleton, York, England Apprentice To Hosier
Thomas Clark RAWLINSON Son U Male 16 Ambleton, York, England Engineers Apprentice (E & M)
Matilda RAWLINSON Daur U Female 15 Ambleton, York, England At Home
Wm. CLARK Brother In Law U Male 33 Ambleton, York, England Railway Bookeeper
Whilst he was the Schoolmaster at Hambleton, John RAWLINSON was the enumerator for the village in the 1871 census return so I am particularly lucky to have fine samples of his handwriting.
Two of John's daughters, Francis Ellen and Mary, were never married. After John's death (before 1901) they continued to live with their mother Mary just half a dozen doors away from their brother Thomas Clark RAWLINSON. (see generation 4 below).
Edward RAWLINSON b. 1841 married Margaret (?) of Burton in Lonsdale and made his home first in Scarborough as a Fish Merchant and then in 1901 he is found in Hull. In the 1881 census Edward had only 2 children, they were living at 1 Castle Crescent, Scarborough :
Edward RAWLINSON Head M Male 40 Sherburn, York, England Fish Merchant (Employing 7 Women 5 Men 2 Boys)
Margaret RAWLINSON Wife M Female 34 Burton In Lonsdale, York, England
Helen C. RAWLINSON Daur Female 13 Scarboro, York, England Scholar
Ernest RAWLINSON Son Male 2 Scarboro, York, England
In the 1901 census Helen was no longer with them (married perhaps?) and two more children had been born. Maggie in 1882 and Kate in 1884. This is as far as I have managed to get with Edwards branch of the family.
Richard RAWLINSON is harder to trace - in 1881 he was living as a widower in Gate Fulford, York. I think he may have had a daughter, Mary, but can find no further information at all.
Of the elder sister of the brothers, Mary RAWLINSON, I can find no trace at all in 1881 under her maiden name but perhaps by this time she had married.
Generation 4.
Thomas Clark RAWLINSON married Ada IBBETSON in 1890. They had 6 children. Lucy Eveline, Edward ("Ted"), Nellie, Catherine ("Kitty"), John Clarke ("Jack") and Edith. Edith was the youngest and when her mother died she was left to run the house. She married late (aged 30) to Arnold WOOD and had a son William Edward, my father.
I have a great deal of information about this part of my family but still some unanswered questions regarding the earlier generations.
Questions & puzzles:
1. Does/did Sherburn-in-Elmet have a Grammar School locally that would instruct people to the standard required to become schoolmasters? And if so - where (if they still exist) are the school records that may show this family’s attendance. Judging from at least Edward and John's professions they were all well educated and in 1851 the daughter of 17 is still classed as a "scholar" so Thomas RAWLINSON must have set great store by his childrens "learning"
2. What happened to John, Richard and Edward's sister Mary?
3. Who was Hannah?
4. when did Mary RAWLINSON (1st generation) die? Ditto for Thomas and Hannah.
5. Are there any clues/records as to where the school in Hambleton was before the Church ran it?
Hope this helps and that someone out there may have some [partial] answers to muy puzzles...
Bright Blessings
Dawn
