Dear Bob,
My Duryea family research has led me to make the following notes concerning the Denton-Raynor connections about which you write. While I cannot offer any useful information on the Raynor ancestry here, I am hoping to have your help with better defining the subsequent Duryea/Denton/Raynor family:
"Sarah Ann Denton, born 1 May 1835, baptized 19 July 1835 [Jamaica Reformed Dutch Church records], daughter of Jane Duryea and James Denton.
"Pending further investigation, we note the 1880 household of Elijah Raynor and his wife Sarah A. Raynor, aged 44 and 45, respectively, in whose household is one "Jas. Denten, aged 70 and described as the father-in-law to Elijah and stated to be a retired butcher [1880 US census for Jamaica, Queens County, New York: FHL Film 1254918National Archives Film T9-0918, page 584C].
"If this connection can be made, the next census checked by this compiler, that of 1910, finds the family of Elijah Raynor, tentatively assumed to be the same man, in the 4th Ward of Queens County with a second wife. This family lives on Union Hall Street, in Queens, and consists of said Elijah Raynor, aged 74, married twice and married to his present wife for 25 years. She is named Martha P., and stated to be 48 years of age, married once and for 25 years, and the mother of 8 children, seven of whom are presently alive. As all of the children in the home are under 25 years of age, with one missing and probably married, with his or her own home, we will not list them here. Also in the household is one Sarah Van Nostrand, aged 73, described as the mother-in-law to Mr. Raynor.
"As the name Elijah Raynor is relatively rare, we feel it quite possible that this man, aged forty-four in 1880 and seventy-four in 1910, of Queens County, was the husband of Sarah Ann Denton, who had therefore died between 1880 (census) and 1885 (remarriage of Elijah Raynor). Again, we make these notes pending further research."
If your research can help me bring cogent documentation, and/or corrections to my speculations, I would very much like to be in touch. Here, or privately.
My great & many thanks, in advance,
Richard
