Jim, I have some info that may help your research.
(I have consolidated all of the many various spellings of Raynor under this one spelling to simplify housekeeping! It seems that even members within the same family household used different spellings.) :-)
Keep in mind that this is still a work in progress!! So AT THIS POINT, I have John Crawford Raynor's family as:
wife: Charity Cole (1838-1902) m. 1857 in Chinquapin, Duplin Co, NC
Charity was the d/o Joshua Cole (1812-1889)and wife Clarkey Pickett (1812-1888), per 1850 Duplin Co Census.
I have what I think is Charity's lineage:
Joshua Cole s/o Robert Cole Jr, b. abt 1785 NC.
Robert Cole jr was listed as that on an 1806 Early NC tax list.If he was born in 1785, he would be 21 years old in 1806 and required to list himself. The 1850 US Census for Duplin Co NC lists Robert, age 65 (which again points to a birth date of 1785.The same 1806 Early NC tax list also has Robert Cole Sr.The 1800 US Census of Robert Cole shows:
1 male age 10-15 (Robert Jr would be that age)
1 male age 16-25 (provides proper age range for the older brother)
1 male age 45+
1 female age 45+
Robert Cole Sr: I located a North Carolina census from the 1784-1786 time period for Duplin County that gave a little more information.
Listed is:
Cole, Robert, Southerland's District, Duplin Co
1 white male 21-60 ~ Robert sr ~
2 other white males ~ Robert jr and unknown brother ~
1 white female ~ Robert's wife ~
1 black age 12-50
Cole, William, Gillespie's District, Duplin Co
1 white male 21-60 ~ William ~
4 other white males ~ 4 males under 21, probably sons ~
2 white females ~ William's wife and probably daughter ~
I interpreted the two Coles as Robert being the older than William since William has a houseful of young kids.I have no idea who William is.An older son, a younger brother, cousin, nephew? Since the Cole lineage isn't a priority for me, I haven't taken any more time to sort them out.
There are various deeds and census records that place Robert Sr in Duplin Co from 1783 through the 1810 US Census that lists:
1 Free White male age 45+
1 Free White female age 45+
Returning to the Raynors:
(I do not have specific documentation on this next **John Raynor** as being the father of John Crawford Raynor mentioned earlier but I placed him as JC Raynor's father through information I found on a David Raynor and wife Sarah Jarvis.)
**John Raynor**, f/o John Crawford Raynor, was the son of
David Raynor was b. abt 1755 in Duplin Co, NC, d. 22 Feb 1820 in Newton Grove, Sampson Co, NC.
1783 NC Early Census places him in Duplin Co, NC
1784 NC Early Census places him in neighboring Sampson Co, NC
1790 US Census, Sampson Co, NC: 3 young males, 2 young females
1791 Deed "David Raynor of Sampson Co" purchased land in neighboring Johnston Co, NC
1800 US Census, Sampson Co, NC 4 sons and 1 daughter under age 15, 1 daughter under 10, himself (45+) and his wife (26-44)
1810 US Census, Duplin Co, NC 2 sons 10-15, 1 dau under 10, himself (45+) and wife (45+)
1812 (NC Muster Rolls 1812-1814): (I don't know how this next information came about but I'll paste it here for your own study/research):
RAINER/RAYNOR, David, Private, NC Militia
Soldier had one pay voucher. He was born about 1755 had three young males and two females living with him and wife 1)Sarah Jarvis in Sampson in 1790. Soldier married 4 March 1779 and had issue, 1-James Jarvis Raynor 1780-, 2-Martha Raynor, 3-Daugher, 4-Elizabeth Raynor who married John Eldridge, and 5-Pheaby Raynor 1790- who married Whitfield
Thornton and 6-John Raynor 1792.
Soldier married 2) Amy McLamb 1773-1833 and had issue: 7-Piercy Raynor 1795- who married John Bright Draughon, 8-Ann Raynor married James Hudson, 9-William Raynor 1799- who married Polly Westbrook, 10-Joab Raynor 1803- married Penny, 11-Samuel Raynor 1806- married Ailey, 12-Matthew Raynor 1810-, and 13-Richard Raynor who was born 3 July 1814 and married Charlotte Bizzell.
Soldier died before 1820 and Amy wrote her Will in Sampson Co. NC in 1833 and died soon afterwards.
David's date of death is shown as Feb 1820 which would be correct with the US Sep 1820 Census where widow Amey is recorded as head of household in Sampson Co, NC.
The NC Marriage Collection confirms David's marriage to Sarah as 4 Mar 1779 in Sampson Co, NC.
And a last point on the counties referenced here: county lines shifted from time to time as new counties were formed, and since Duplin, Sampson, Johnston and Onslow are all neighbors, that may explain some of the back and forth the records indicate.
David was the s/o Daniel Raynor.
Feb 1746: Daniel is first recorded in Onslow Co, NC when he witnessed the sighing of a Will by Charles Williamson.
25 Oct 1754: Muster Roll of Troops:
RAINER/RAYNOR, Daniel, Private, N.C. Militia
Soldier had two RW pay vouchers. Soldier lived in Duplin in 1760+ near present day Wallace, with apparent family size of five sons and two daughters. Soldier was born about 1732. Soldier is believed to Be the father of David and Richard Raynor of Sampson Co. NC.
1763:Deed states that "Daniel Raynor" of Duplin Co purchased 200 acres ... from Parker Pierce..."
1776:"Soldier had two Rev War pay vouchers" for service in the NC Militia.
1786:Tax Listing for Daniel Raynor, Duplin Co, NC
1800:US Census, Duplin Co, NC
2 free white males under 10 years of age
2 free white males between 10 and 15 years of age
1 free white male between 16 and 25 years of age
1 free white male over 45 years of age
1 free white female under 10 years of age
1 free white female between between 10 and 15 years of age
1 free white female over 45 years of age
1806: NC Early Census/Tax List:Daniel Raynor, Duplin Co.
As records indicate, Daniel stayed in the Onslow/Duplin area.
Daniel was the s/o John Raynor Jr (I think...)
John Raynor Jr was b. abt 1685 in Chowan Precinct, NC,
d. 1734 Bertie Co, NC
12 Sep 1720 he witnessed a Will
10 Jul 1722 he witnessed a land deed (surname spelled RANER)
16 Jul 1722 he signed a deed purchasing 50 acres "south side of Warwick Swamp" from John Goodin and wife Mary.
John Jr bought the land above (1722) which is sold by his son Daniel and Daniel's mother Mary in 1737, possible dau of Edward Wood who was close by and appeared in various deeds and records.
John Jr was the s/o John Raynor Sr:
John Sr was born in 1660, d. Jul 1691 in Norfolk Co, VA.I think this is a pretty good match because John Sr left a Will that named his "wife Anne", "son Richard, not of age of majority" and "son JOHN WHO IS IN THE WILDERNESS OF NORTH CAROLINA."
Sons John and Richard appeared in records in the area of early Albemarle.
So here's what I have at this point:
John Crawford Raynor b. 1836 Duplin Co, d. Duplin Co
s/o John Raynor b. 1792 Sampson Co, d. Duplin Co
s/o David Raynor b. abt 1755 Duplin Co, d. Feb 1820 Sampson Co
s/o Daniel Raynor Sr b. abt 1720 Bertie Co, d. Duplin Co
s/o John Raynor Jr b. 1685 Chowan Pct, NC, d. 1734 Bertie Co, NC
s/o John Raynor Sr b. 1660, d. Jul 1691 Norfolk Co, VA.
With the relatively short amount of research time spent on this, I've not been able to link John Raynor Sr to anyone in Va or in England. There are a couple of good possibilities but that's all:
Wassill Raynor b. 1597 England and wife Joane left England on 17 April 1619, transported by wealthy merchant Richard Stephens to whom they were indentured in Jamestown, Va.They were still in his service through at least 1625 as recorded in court testimony they were required to give.
By 1631, Wassill is identified as a "Virginia planter" when the joined others who were seeking relief from the customs fees they had to pay on tobacco exported to Virginia.
Records indicate no relationship between the Raynors and Stephens other than that of master/servant.
The second possible candidate is:
Raynor, Francis:
13 Oct 1669:Francis was named one of three appraisers appointed to appraise the estate of John Godbehere.
13 Oct 1693:Francis witnessed a Deed of Gift for John Goodrich and his wife Rebecca of 100 acres to their son Charles Goodrich.
1704:Francis is listed on her Majesty's Quit Rents for subjects living in Isle of Wight, VA.
29 Sep 1719: Charles Goodrich witnessed Will of Francis Raynor "of Isle of Wight, VA"
28 Sep 1719, Of the Upper Parish, Isle of Wight, VA:Legacy - wife Joanna; my two daughters, Joanna, the wife of Thomas Ward and Frances, the wife of William Little; grandson Samuel Rayner, the son of my deceased son John Rayner. - Wills and Administrations of Isle of Wight County, Virginia, 1647-1800 p80
There are many by the name of Samuel Rayner in that general time period, but none can be positively linked to Francis Raynor.I did find record of "Francis Raynor of Georgia, in 1784, a Land Grant for Rev. War service."This second Francis Raynor could certainly be a son of this Samuel, and grandson of the Francis of Virginia.
:-DIf you aren't totally confused now, I'll try again! lol
I hope there is something in all of this that will be helpful to you.It is the sum total on what I have the the groups named above, with the exception of some children.
Happy hunting to you!
Margie
