Meaning of surname
According to Sir Gilbert Reaney, one of the foremost authorities on the subject of English surnames, the surname Reaney comes from the Vikings. Forgive me for forgetting offhand the exact spelling but it was originally something like Ruan Naugh, which means raven hill.
I am from Belfast, where there are a number of Reaneys. There are more in Co. Armagh. I believe that the Reaneys in Sheffield, England could have come from Ireland, but is it not more likely that they came from Scandinavia?
