My cousin got ahold of a family tree book and found out that our great great great great grandpa was either an Indian chief, or the son of an Indian chief, and he had a relationship with a African American woman, causing him to be shunned from the tribe. Originally the last name was Red. Then another D (redd) got thrown in so no one would know it was him that got shunned for having relations with an African American woman.
