William Redd (b.1760s-d.1840's) of Burke Co GA
Posted by: keith moody (ID *****4727) Date: August 28, 2011 at 07:21:23
  of 952

Due to lack of records, it has been hard to piece this family together.
Below is my theory. Any additions or corrections welcome.

Descendants of William Redd

Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM1 REDD was born Bet. 1760 - 1770, and died Bet. 1840 - 1850 in Burke Co GA. He married MARY ??. She was born Abt. 1780 in NC, and died Aft. 1850 in Richmond Co GA.

Notes for WILLIAM REDD:
NOTE: This is SPECULATION; I do not have PROOF that these are the children of William Redd of Burke Co GA. However, he is the only Red(d) listed in Burke or Richmond Co Ga in the 1820 census and it states that he had 9 possible sons in his home.

1805 GA Land Lottery
William Redd of Burke Co GA won Baldwin, D2 GB130

1820 Burke Co GA census (only Red in Burke or Richmond Co GA)
William Red 5m/10 2m10-16 2m16-26 1m45+ 1f10-16 2f16-26 1f45+

Children of WILLIAM REDD and MARY ?? are:
2.       i.       BERRY2 REDD, b. Bet. 1790 - 1800, SC or GA; d. Bet. 1834 - 1837, Richmond Co GA.
       ii.       HIRAM REDD, b. Bet. 1800 - 1803; d. Aft. 1830; m. BARBARY ??, Abt. 1830; b. Abt. 1814; d. 1881, Burke Co GA.

Notes for HIRAM REDD:
Took part in the 1821 GA Land Lottery as resident of Burke Co GA
Hiram Redd is not listed in the 1840 GA census; but Barbary Redd (20-30) is listed with two boys (5-10); is this Hiram's widow? Barbary Red does not show up in the 1850,1860 or 1870 census; she is listed in 1880 Burke Co Ga census, age 66.

3.       iii.       HOLLAND REDD, b. Abt. 1800; d. Bet. 1840 - 1843, Burke Co GA.
       iv.       THOMAS REDD, b. Bef. 1802; d. Aft. 1820.

Notes for THOMAS REDD:

Notes for GREEN B REDD:
Took part in the 1832 GA Gold Lottery as resident of Burke Co GA.
There is a Green Red listed in 1840 Burke Co and another in 1840 Richmond Co; I suspect that these MAY be the same person.
He left a will in Richmond Co GA; Maria left a will in Burke Co Ga; she had previously married Mr Byne.

       vi.       DUDLEY REDD, b. Bet. 1810 - 1814; d. Aft. 1839.

Notes for DUDLEY REDD:
Took part in the 1832 GA Land Lottery as resident of Burke Co GA.

Is Dudley the 2nd male 20-30 listed with Welcome Red in the 1840 census??

(NOTE: this is land that NOAH Red won in the 1832 GA Land Lottery; apparently he transferred it to his brother Wellcome??)

5.       ix.       LAVINA REDD, b. Bet. 1794 - 1800, GA; d. Aft. 1860.
       x.       "GIRL" REDD, b. Bet. 1794 - 1804; d. Aft. 1820.
       xi.       "GIRL" REDD, b. Bet. 1804 - 1810; d. Aft. 1820.

Generation No. 2

2. BERRY2 REDD (WILLIAM1) was born Bet. 1790 - 1800 in SC or GA, and died Bet. 1834 - 1837 in Richmond Co GA. He married MARY "POLLY" MASON 1820 in Richmond Co GA. She was born Abt. 1805 in SC, and died Bet. 1850 - 1856 in Warren Co GA or Webster Co Iowa.

Notes for BERRY REDD:
Took part in the 1821 GA Land Lottery as resident of Richmond Co GA; listed in the 1830 Richmond Co GA census; listed in the 1833 & 1834 Richmond Co Ga tax digests. Article in the 1826 Augusta GA newspaper shows that Berry Red was in jail in Barnwell Co SC for harbouring a runaway slave.

1830 Richmond Co GA census
Berry Redd 1m30-40 1f<5 2f5-10 1f15-20?? 1f30-40 (the female 15-20 appears to be marked out??)

Notes for MARY "POLLY" MASON:
NOTE: This is a THEORY. I have not found definite PROOF of the names of ANY of the children of Berry Redd & Mary "Polly" Mason.

Children of BERRY REDD and MARY MASON are:
       i.       LAURETTA "LAURA"3 REDD, b. Abt. 1822, GA; d. 03 January 1906, Richmond Co GA; m. (1) HORACE SMITH, 1840, Cass (now Bartow) Co GA; b. Abt. 1796, New Hampshire; d. 13 May 1853, Richmond Co GA; m. (2) WILLIAM H RICH, Abt. 1858; b. Abt. 1816, New York; d. 1877, Richmond Co GA.

Took part in the 1827 GA Land Lottery as resident of Burke Co GA;
Took part in the 1832 GA Land Lottery-granted 16 July 1838--340-11-4 Cherokee

Augusta Chronicle, 2 June 1840: Burke County, sheriff sells 100 acres oak & hickory land, adjoining Lewis Whitfield, HOLLAND RED, et al...to satisfy four executions in favor of Green B Red vs Barbary Red
Augusta Chronicle, 19 Oct 1843: Burke County, sheriff sells 76 acres adjoining Lewis Whitfield, et al...to satisfy James R Moore, administator of estate of Jacob Evans (dcd) vs JANNET RED.

In the 1830 Burke Co GA census, Holland Red is listed (1m20-30) followed by a list of "free persons of color" including four NUNES families; including Janet Nunes 1m<10 1f<10 1f24-35.
In 1840, Holland Red appears to have added a wife & four children to his home, including two born in the 1820's (stepchildren?)
In 1850, Jannet Red has James Nunez (25) in her home (her son?)
Burke Co GA deed (1847): Charles Nunis to my "beloved niece" Genet Red "my interest in the estate of Frances Galphin (dcd); two negroes: Ned (age 40) & (male) (age 35). Charles Nunis (b.1779SC) is listed as "mulatto" in the 1850 Burke Co GA census.

Child of HOLLAND REDD and JANNET NUNEZ is:
       i.       SARAH J3 REDD, b. Abt. 1840, Burke Co GA; d. Aft. 1900, Burke Co GA.

Notes for SARAH J REDD:
Not married. Where is she in the 1870 & 1880 census?

4. NOAH2 REDD (WILLIAM1) was born Bet. 1810 - 1814, and died Aft. 1840. He married MARY ??. She was born Abt. 1795, and died Aft. 1860.

Notes for NOAH REDD:
Took part in the 1832 GA Land Lottery as resident of Burke Co GA.

The 1840 census indicates that he has a wife, son (b.1830-1835), son (1835-1840) & daughter (1835-1840); plus two older females.
Is Mary Red (b.1795) listed in the 1850 & 1860 Burke Co GA census his widow?
I have William Augustus Redd (1838-1911) & Cornelius A Redd (1832-1868) as possible sons of Berry Redd; but they COULD be children of Noah Redd.

Children of NOAH REDD and MARY ?? are:
       i.       "BOY"3 REDD, b. Bet. 1830 - 1835.
       ii.       "BOY" REDD, b. Bet. 1835 - 1840.
       iii.       VIRGINIA REDD, b. Abt. 1836; d. Aft. 1860.

Notes for VIRGINIA REDD:
Not married

       iv.       ELIZABETH REDD, b. Abt. 1841; d. Aft. 1850.

5. LAVINA2 REDD (WILLIAM1) was born Bet. 1794 - 1800 in GA, and died Aft. 1860. She married ?? KNIGHT. He died Bet. 1840 - 1850.

Notes for LAVINA REDD:
Green B Redd (1808-1853) left a will in Richmond Co Ga naming nephew, Cornelius Redd, & niece Lethe Knight. In 1850, Cornelius Redd was living with Lavina Knight, who had a daughter Lethe Knight. So I assume Lavina Knight is Green B Redd's sister.
Census records indicate that Lavina's husband was probably Jesse Knight (need proof)

Children of LAVINA REDD and ?? KNIGHT are:
       i.       PRISCILLA J W3 KNIGHT, b. Abt. 1831, GA; d. Aft. 1850.
       ii.       LETHE A E KNIGHT, b. Abt. 1833, GA; d. Aft. 1853.
       iii.       ANN E KNIGHT, b. Abt. 1838, GA; d. Aft. 1850.
       iv.       JESSE G R KNIGHT, b. Abt. 1843.
