Uwe,
My grandfather's name was James (Jim) Redington and he was born in 1872 in Galway City. His brother John was born in 1867 or 1868 in Galway City, went to America in the 1880s or 1890s and was never heard of again. If you're related to my line, he's the only John Redington I can think of.
The Christian names "John Joseph" would indicate that your grandfather was more likely a native Irish Redington (i.e. an "O Roideachain") rather than one of the Clarinbridge Redingtons who often used Christian names more commonly found in England rather than Ireland (although did also use names like Thomas and Nicholas).
Outside of my own line, most Redingtons living in Ireland are from around the Dunmore/Tuam area and spell their name with 2 "D"s. If this web-site is anything to go by, there must also have been Redingtons in Mayo and Roscommon but they may all have emigrated during the last 150 years.
I'm afraid this is the best I can come up with at present but, if I come across any more possible connections, I'll post them.
