Charles Claiborn Reid/Reed, abt 1830 LA - abt 1893 TX
I am still searching for info on Charles Claiborn Reid/Reed is my gggrandfather. He stated he was born in Rapides Parish, LA about 1830 per his age on the census', but as yet no proof. His last child of record was born 1892 in Polk Co., and info passed down in the family states he was 63 when he died. Therefore it is summised that he died in Polk Co.about 1893, as yet his death info or grave has not been located.
Per the info passed down in the family, he and 2 sisters were orphaned when he was about 12-14. It is unknown who his parents were or what happened to them; or the names of his two sisters or what happened to them. A search of the 1840 Rapides Parish census lists only 1 Reid/Reed and he appears to be single. It could be that C.C. was born elsewhere and came to LA at a very young age. C.C. came to Polk Co., TX about 1848 per papers regarding guardianship for his estate in Polk Co since he was not yet of age. C.C.He came with a John Marsh family to TX along with others from Rapides Parish. Land records in Rapides Parish were destroyed during the civil when the town of Alexandra was burned.
C.C. was married 3 times; 1st to Catherine Rook in 1852, 2nd to her sister Nancy Jane Rook Green Marlow/Marler in about 1876 and 3rd to Ellen Arella Mainer Powell in 1888. With Catherine he sired 9 children: Alice, Murdock, Samuel, Mary Ann, Lucinda(Lucy) Jane, Franklin, Thomas, James Stafford, and Emma; no children with Nancy; and 4 children with Ellen; Myrtle, William Harley, Kiefer, and John Mainer.
For some reason my grandmother thought her grandfather's name was John Reid, so it could be he had four names. Most records found listed him as C.C. or Claiborn. However when he registed his cattle brand in TX in 1850 it was JR.
If anyone has any info about C.C. and his family I would greatly appreciate it if they would be willing to share.
