Difficult to say that there is a connection between the REIF(F)ERS from the area of three corners (Belgium/Luxemburg/Germany)and the other tribe near Kassel /Hesse. In my knowledge our tribe from the Eifel had two emigrations: 1. to the USA around 1850 and 2. to the area of Solingen and Gelsenkirchen in North-Rhine-Westfalia around 1900-1910. The reason was always the harsh environment of the Eifel.
The reason for spelling the name with one or two F is simply explained with the fact that it was caused by misspelling in the church records (Roman Catholic).Even in my family we have REIFERS with one or two F.
I like the theorie that our name is connected to the little village REIFF. Nevertheless a REIFFER was someone who collected wood or shrubs for fire wood, making brooms etc.
Without any doubt the REIFERS are originated on both sides of the river OUR, dividing Germany and Luxemburg. Today there are more REIFERS living in Luxemburg than on the German side.
It also may be interesting that the whole area was covered with Roman settlements till around 400 A.C. One still can find the remains. The town of TRIER, Treveris was the Roman name, is the oldest town in Germany only 50 mls south. Roman soldiers had outposts in the area where our ancestors lived to provide the legions with food and shelter on their way north.
