Bertha Flege was born on Aug. 15, 1910, on an acreage 1 ˝ miles west of Horton, the daughter of Fred H. and Caroline (Buhman) Flege. She was baptized and confirmed in St. John Lutheran Church – Western Douglas, rural Plainfield.
Bert attended school in Horton until the sixth grade when the family moved to Waverly. She graduated from the Waverly High School in 1927, being the first class to graduate from the new high school building. She then worked as a waitress in Friedl's Cafe in Waterloo.
On April 27, 1930, she was united in marriage to Clarence Reinhardt at the First Baptist Church in Plainfield. The couple moved to Traer, where Clarence managed a produce company for one year. They then moved to Waverly in 1931. After Bert raised her family, she worked as for J. C. Penney, Schlutsmeyer's, Kettner Clothing, and Eckers Greenhouse. In 1955, they moved to Mason City to share ownership with her son and daughter-in-law, Bob & Marj, in the Plaza Lounge. They sold the business the following year and moved back to Waverly, where she assisted Clarence when he became manager of the Waverly Golf & Country Club until 1969.
At that time, Bert retired from working outside the home, and was a homemaker. After Clarence died in 1996, Bert remained in her home until 2003, when she moved to Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community.
Bert was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Bert is survived by her daughter, Connie (David) Bishop of Newbury Park, Calif.; two daughter-in-laws, Marjorie and Marilyn Reinhardt, both of Waverly; nine grandchildren; 20 great–grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence; two sons, Robert and Donald; daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Ed Blackwell; her parents; two brothers, Harry and Eugene Flege; and four sisters, Grace Haun, Leona Kurash, Lenora Horton, and Erma Knott.
