Osage Relle, Oklahoma, 19th century

Hello -- this is out of left field to the other postings here. My great-great-great grandmother was Marie Louise Relle who was in Missouri in 1840s. (Makes me wonder--another posting on this site mentions a Marie Louise Relle in Wisconsin--could she be a parent? or did she or an ancestor possibly migrate down to Missouri? or not?). Marie-Louise Relle married Joseph Rivard (#3; see below for #1, #2). He died in 1846. Then she married Jean A. Blanchette. She had 6 children by Joseph Revard. Blanchette raised the kids with her and they sometimes used the Blanchette surname.

Marie-Louise and Joseph were ancestors of many, many mixed-blood Osage (see FYI below, re Joseph), with many surnames. Lots is known about the descendants, but I've found almost nothing about Marie-Louise Relle (but have only started looking). My mother, in an article in Osage County Profiles (1978) stated that Marie-Louise Relle was an Osage mixed-blood. I don't have access to how she knew this: Perhaps family stories; I can't ask her (she died in 2004) and there's nothing in the Osage-related papers she left behind. My own research quest is to find out more about Marie-Louise, especially whether she was part Osage.

Mary Ann Mickey, who runs the Rivard Cousins website, told me in an e-mail that she had never found the marriage record of Marie-Louise and Joseph (and for that very reason it might be possible that Marie-Louise was Indian), but that at the St. Charles Borromee church in St. Charles County, MO (where Joseph's parents were married) there is a marriage record of a Charles Relle (son of Joseph Relle and Charloette Parens). In my mother's papers is a thin book by Annette Moncravie Gore, "The Osage, an Imperious Ancestry," consisting of photocopies of many old records. I haven't studied this book thoroughly and don't have it at hand right now, but one record in it lists Charles Relle as a witness to a baptism (or a marriage? can't remember) during that era.

My mother did a lot of original research in libraries in OK and MO. Her notes say that the name Relle was often also spelled Rhelle and also sometimes Raille or Rail or Rel.

FYI: Joseph's father Joseph Rivard (Revard)(#2) was a trader, half Osage, in MO and present OK, married to Francoise Roi. He was killed by Cherokees in 1821. His father, Joseph Rivard (#1) married an Osage woman, Catherine.
