Thomas Renick m. Pheobe is the son of Robert Renick, who was killed in the Shawnee raid of 1757 that resulted in the captivity I described. Thomas had both a son and a brother named William, so I assume the William named in the list is the brother, since the son was born abt. 1779.
The mother of Thomas and William Renick was Betsey Archer, the woman who was captured. Sampson Archer is her brother (their father was also Sampson Archer, but the evidence shows he did not emigrate, but died 1754 in County Tyrone, Ireland).
Richard Mathews is the son of John Mathews and Ann Archer, sister of Betsey. Thus Richard is the cousin of Thomas and William Renick.
John Mathews is a problem, because there are many of them. He is NOT the father of Richard Mathews, because that John Mathews died testate 1757. And he is NOT the brother of Richard Mathews, because that John Mathews was murdered by arson shortly after making his will in November 1767. Another John Mathews was a son of Richard Mathews's brother Samson Mathews; another was son of George Mathews, another brother of Richard. And there are possibly others who are not in my records.
William and Thomas Renick are mentioned in the following account of Greenbrier:
Greenbrier Pioneers and Their Homes, Renick House, Cave Farm, Page 211
"They were held captive for five years until an Indian treaty, negotiated by the British officer, Colonel Bouquet, forced their release in 1765, at Staunton, Virginia. Four years later, in 1769, two of the sons, William, who had been born in Augusta county in 1769, and Robert, then young men, accompanied John Stuart and Robert McClanahan on their pioneering venture to Greenbrier County. Of the other Renick children, Thomas returned later to his home, but, having grown fond of the Indians, went back, married a squaw, and settled on the Scioto; Joshua, another son, never returned; and a daughter, Betsey, died in captivity."
