Gordon, I have the following info which may or may not be of help. The records seem somewhat different from yours. See what you think: There was a James Rennie who marrid a Jean in 1743. In fact, he had 3 wives -- and two were named Jean! Let me take it from the top: 1. James Rennie - baptized 2 Oct. 1685. Parents: James Rennie (baptized 7 December 1662), "Proclaimed" to Agnes Graham, 7 Aug., 1681. Paternal Grandparents: James Rennie (baptized 2 Aug. 1634 at Balcastle), married Feb. 2, 1661 to Margaret Ronald, daughter of John Ronald. Paternal Great-grandparents: John Rennie or Raynie, born about 1600 in Lensie, married about 1620 to an M. Somerville (Gilmore or Hog). 1. The James of which you may be speaking may be the one who first married Jean Miller on 18 December, 1712. She died about 1725. With Jean Miller he had these children: a)John Rennie - b. 28 March 1714 at Balmalloch; married Margaret Marshall, sister of Henry Marshall (Bochill) and daughter of Thomas Marshall and Elspeth Yool or Youl. John and Margaret sired several children, including Alexander ("The Deacon") Rennie, who you will run across in other postings on this page. "The Deacon" was my great-great-great uncle! b)Agnes - b. 4 March, 1716, who married Alexander Laing 26 Oct, 1734, and had 7 children. c) Jean - b. 18 June, 1719, who married John Gilchrist, 31 Jan, 1738, and had 3 children. d)Janet - b. 24 Jan 1723, "died young" and e) another Janet, b. 20 Sept. 1724. From his second marriage - to Marion Henderson, 7 Feb, 1727, he had another five children: a) Grizel R. - b. 9 Feb, 1728, married John Patrick, 22 Oct, 1750; b) James R. - b. June 25, 1730; c) Margaret R. - b. 9 December, 1731; d) Robert R. - b. 23 November, 1733 - "died young"; and e) Marion R. - b. 30 December, 1735, married William Fergus, a solder from ***Kirkintilloch***. Marion Henderson Rennie died sometime before 1743, and James then took his 3rd wife -- Jean Tennent -- sometime in 1743. They had only one child -- a son,Robert - b. 2 Sept. 1745, who married Janet Burns, and had one child (per my listing)-- a daughter, Janet, who married Thomas Buchanan. Robert died in 1809 and Janet Burns Rennie died in 1819. You can see by the above, that the James who married a Jean in 1743 may not be the James you are looking for. A distant cousin of mine, a J.O. Gamble (who I believe is now deceased) did extensive family research when he retired. In his writings, he says that Sir John Rennie, Knight of White Hall Palace, lived at 10 Charing Cross, London, and died in 1821 -- and is buried next to Sir Christopher Wren in the Crypt at St. Paul's Cathedral. Gamble wrote that his title died with him, and did not pass to his son, John. Gamble believed that in addition to a John Jr., Sir John sired several other children -- including my great-great grandfather, Alexander. However, my family tree shows that Alexander's father was Henry, so this is a point of confusion. Gamble also writes that there is some disagreement about who was Sir John's brother. Gamble believed he was the brother of James, who, my tree shows, was also brother of Alexander "The Deacon", Henry, Peter, Agnes and Jean (see below). Now, to connect with what you have written, John Rennie, son of James Rennie and his first wife, Jean Miller, had several children with Margaret Marshall: a) Agnes, b. Oct. 30, 1748 b) James, b. Oct. 20, 1750 - "died early" c) Alexander, "The Deacon" - b. 17 Dec. 1752 d) Henry - b. 28 Oct. 1754 at Allenfauld (we'll come back to him); e) James - b. 22 Aug, 1756 f) John - b. 27 Aug, 1758 g) Peter - b. 6 July, 1760 and h) Jean - b. 27 Oct. 1765. Now Henry, my great-great-great grandfather, married a Margaret Rennie, and sired: a) Margaret - b. 10 Dec. 1780 b) Elizabeth - b. 21 Feb. 1782 c) Jean - b. 8 Dec. 1783 d) Agnes - b. 6 Sept, 1785 d) Marion - b. 22 Aug, 1789 ("died young") e) Janet - b. 14 July, 1791 f) ***John*** and Barbara (twins) - b. 21 Sept, ***1794*** g) Robert - 20 March, 1797 h) Marion #2 - b. 10 October, 1798 and i) Alexander (my great-great-grandfather) - b. 2 May, 1803. Alexander married Margaret Gillies (Gillis/Gilpatrick?) in August, 1826, and emmigrated to Canada, following his brothers, Henry and Robert, and settling in Rockburn and then Hinchinbrook(e) in southwestern Quebec. There are not many Georges mentioned in my family tree, and I can't match the ones you mention with the dates for the ones I have. Ditto with a James born in 1816. I show a James born in 1809 (son of Alexander, "The Deacon" and his second wife, Elizabeth Kerr (or Carr)), and a James born in 1833(son of John Rennie, Allanfould, Kilsyth, and Grace (Grizel) Young. However, the other Jameses in my records are all pre-1800... Also, there are very few Williams, and I can't find one b. 1746... So...I've either cleared up some stuff or made your notes even more confusing! If you want to correspond, I can be reached at margblank@shaw.ca. Good luck! -- Margaret Rennie Blank Calgary, Alberta, Canada Notify Administrator about this message?
